In this week’s session of the Bent On Better podcast, where better means becoming the best you in health, fitness, and overall wellness, my guest is Matthew Ibrahim of Mobility 101.  In this episode we discuss practicing what you preach, improving your mobility, and staying hungry for knowledge by being a life long learner.

Matthew Ibrahim is a hybrid strength and conditioning coach, movement teacher, speaker, writer, and the creator of Mobility 101.  Mobility 101 represents a relentless pursuit to bridge the gap between rehabilitation and performance, ultimately building stronger, more resilient human movement and performance.  Matt’s mission is to help people achieve higher levels of strength and performance, while decreasing the rate of injury through safe and effective training and treatment methods.
Currently, Matt is the Director of Strength & Conditioning at Boston Physical Therapy & Wellness. Additionally, he is a student at the Cortiva Institute of Massage Therapy, where he is refining his manual, soft tissue, and deep tissue hands-on techniques.

Matt is truly Bent On Better.


Some take-away points we discuss in this episode:

1.  Help People With Your Passion

Matt mentions in our chat how it can be overwhelming when people are continuously contacting you for help, input, tips, guidance, etc. But he makes it a point to never neglect this opportunity to help others in some way.  Since Matt’s premier focus and passion happens to fall within the mobility niche, he not only helps people directly, but he also indirectly produces great content, on a  regular basis, for all to use.

2. Be A Life Long Learner

As Matt says, “iron sharpens iron.”  If you have goals to improve whatever it is you do, make sure you closely align yourself with individuals who have done what you want to do. Find a mentor, find people to learn from who are in the field or profession you are in or what to be in.  Once you have learned something, do not stop learning.  Just because you’re out of high school or college, does not mean you need to stop learning.  As I mention in the show, turn your car into a mobile classroom!  Download some podcasts, pick out an eBook or audiobook to listen to and read, watch some educational videos on YouTube, whatever floats your boat (or should I say whatever moves your mind…you know, since this is a chat with the owner of Mobility 101. HA!). We should all want to learn from multiple outlets overtime, instead of just once and done.

3. Practice What You Preach

If you’re trying to show someone how to do something, show them by you doing it.  Matt has found that exposing himself as a coach, by sharing photos and videos of himself using proper form and technique while lifting in his regular life has opened the door to many more connections.  You have to practice what your preach if you’re going to preach anything and make it your life’s work.

4. T.H.I.N.K.

Think before you make a decision on something.  The THINK acronym is a reminder for you to check these five aspects of the source: 

-is it TRUE?

-is it HELPFUL?

-is it INSPIRING?

-is it NECESSARY?

-is it KIND?

Matt’s other ways to keep yourself in check:

-“Stay hungry”
-Have constant goals
-Remember that it is a process, trust in the process and keep moving forward
-Expose yourself to multiple outlets with different perspectives
